For many international students, the ability to work after graduation is an important part of choosing where and what to study in Canada.
Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit, commonly called the PGWP, can allow eligible graduates of certain Canadian institutions and programs to gain work experience after completing their studies.
However, PGWP rules have changed significantly in recent years.
Graduating from a Canadian designated learning institution does not automatically mean you will qualify for a PGWP.
This guide explains the current eligibility rules, language requirements, field-of-study requirements, permit length and major issues students should check when planning for 2027.
What Is a Post-Graduation Work Permit?
A PGWP is an open work permit available to eligible graduates of qualifying Canadian study programs.
Because it is generally an open work permit, eligible graduates can work for many different employers rather than being tied to one employer in the same way as an employer-specific work permit.
Does Every Canadian School Qualify for a PGWP?
No.
This is one of the most important facts prospective international students should understand before paying tuition.
A school may be a designated learning institution, but that does not automatically mean every program at that school qualifies for a PGWP.
Students should check both the institution and the specific program before accepting an admission offer.
General PGWP Study Requirement
Under current rules, applicants generally need to complete a PGWP-eligible program at an eligible designated learning institution.
The program normally needs to be at least eight months long, or at least 900 hours for certain Quebec programs.
Other eligibility requirements also apply.
New Language Requirements
Most people applying for a PGWP now need to provide proof of English or French ability.
Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Graduates
Graduates with bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees generally need at least:
- Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English in all four language areas, or
- Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) 7 in French in all four language areas
Other University Programs
Graduates of other university programs are also generally subject to the CLB/NCLC 7 language requirement.
College, Polytechnic and Other Non-University Programs
Graduates of other eligible college, polytechnic or non-university programs generally need at least CLB 5 in English or NCLC 5 in French in all four language areas.
Applicants should use an approved language test and check the current list of accepted tests before applying.
PGWP Field-of-Study Requirement
Some graduates must also satisfy a field-of-study requirement.
You generally do not need to meet the field-of-study requirement if:
- You graduated with a bachelor’s degree
- You graduated with a master’s degree
- You graduated with a doctoral degree
- You applied for your study permit before November 1, 2024
- You meet another official exemption
For certain other university, college, polytechnic and non-university programs, applicants who applied for their study permit on or after November 1, 2024 may need to graduate from an eligible field of study.
For 2026, Canada froze the eligible field-of-study list, meaning fields were not being added or removed during that year. Students planning for 2027 should check whether Canada updates the list for the new year.
How Long Can a PGWP Last?
PGWP length depends on the type and length of the study program and the applicant’s passport validity.
Master’s Degree Graduates
Eligible master’s graduates can receive a three-year PGWP even if the master’s program was less than two years, as long as the program was at least eight months long and all other requirements are met.
Programs Between Eight Months and Two Years
For many other eligible programs lasting at least eight months but less than two years, the PGWP may be issued for up to approximately the same length as the program.
Programs of Two Years or More
Graduates of eligible programs lasting two years or more may receive a PGWP valid for up to three years.
Your passport expiration date can shorten the permit that is initially issued.
How Long Do You Have to Apply?
Eligible graduates generally have up to 180 days after receiving confirmation that they completed their program to apply for a PGWP.
Students should not wait until the final day.
Your status in Canada and the validity of your study permit can affect how you apply and what you can do while waiting.
What Documents May Be Required?
Depending on your case, documents can include:
- Proof of program completion
- Degree, diploma or certificate
- Official transcript
- Proof of full-time study
- Language test results
- Proof of eligible field of study where required
- Passport
- Medical examination evidence where applicable
Immigration authorities can request additional documents.
Can You Work While Waiting for a PGWP Decision?
Some graduates can work while waiting for a decision if they meet the relevant conditions.
Do not assume everyone who submits a PGWP application can automatically begin or continue working.
Check your current status and the official conditions before working.
Can a PGWP Lead to Permanent Residence?
A PGWP does not automatically provide permanent residence.
However, Canadian work experience gained while holding valid work authorization can help some graduates qualify for immigration programs where they meet the requirements.
Possible routes can include:
- Express Entry programs
- Provincial nominee programs
- Other federal or provincial pathways
Eligibility depends on the specific program, occupation, work experience, language ability and other factors.
How to Choose a Program With PGWP in Mind
Check the DLI and program
Do not rely only on an education agent saying a college is “PGWP approved.” Verify the specific institution and program yourself.
Check the field-of-study requirement
If your program type is subject to the eligible-field rule, confirm its Classification of Instructional Programs code.
Check the program length
Program length can affect the potential length of your PGWP.
Think about employability
A work permit is useful only if you can find suitable employment. Research the labour market associated with your program before paying tuition.
Can Nigerian Students Apply for a PGWP?
Yes. Nigerian graduates can apply if they complete an eligible Canadian program and satisfy the PGWP requirements.
PGWP eligibility is based on immigration and study criteria, not simply nationality.
Common PGWP Mistakes
Avoid these mistakes:
- Assuming every DLI program qualifies
- Ignoring the field-of-study rule
- Failing to prepare for the language requirement
- Allowing your status to expire without understanding your options
- Missing the 180-day application period
- Assuming a short program always gives a three-year work permit
- Choosing a course based only on an agent’s promise of permanent residence

Final Thoughts
The Post-Graduation Work Permit remains valuable for eligible international graduates in Canada, but students must plan before choosing a program.
Check PGWP eligibility before paying tuition, understand the language and field-of-study rules and confirm how long a permit you could potentially receive.
Students preparing for 2027 should also watch for changes to the eligible field-of-study list and any new immigration rules announced by Canada.
